The British rankings provider Quacquarelli Symonds released its first sustainability rankings at the end of October, the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023. In Environmental Impact category, our university was ranked 198th, as the best Hungarian institution. In the overall ranking of Environmental Impact and Social Impact indicators, it was ranked between 341 and 360. BME was the best in the Sustainable Institution indicator, ranking 23rd out of 700 institutions. The ranking was compiled while making the QS World Ranking, based on a survey of over 1400 institutions. In compiling the ranking, QS assessed institutions on nearly 40 criteria, such as whether the institution has a sustainability research site, records its annual water and energy consumption, and has active research collaborations with companies on the Forbes 2000 list. The ranker also monitored whether the university has a Climate Change Strategy and a Gender Equality Plan.
BME trains sustainability experts in two programmes, and GTK plays a key role in both of them. One of them is the Master in Regional and Environmental Economics led by the Department of Environmental Economics and Sustainability. The programme aims to train experts in environmental and regional economics, competent in sustainability-related problems, and propose novel solutions by putting their theoretical knowledge and acquired expertise to practice. The other is the Environmental Engineering BSc and MSc programmes where the Department of Environmental Economics and Sustainability leads the environmental management specialization.
In addition, the institution’s management has made it a priority to explore, implement, support and promote sustainable operation and environmental solutions. A work group on the “Sustainable BME” programme, set up in spring this year, brings together a wide range of university citizens involved in this issue. The initiative will be accompanied by the “BME for Sustainability” conference on 25 November.
University of Szeged (381-400) and Eötvös Loránd University (601+) are ranked alongside BME (341-360) from Hungary.
In April 2022, our university was also ranked highly in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, ranking 211th in Engineering and Technology category, and among the top 200 in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and architecture training programmes.
Is is also a great recognition that our Faculty is one of the two Hungarian institutions on the QS list in the Business & Management category. Besides the Corvinus University of Budapest, the BME GTK is the other institution that offers internationally ranked courses in the field of management. This year, our programmes were ranked 501-550, placing us in the top 30% of all universities surveyed.
