The Environmental Science Youth Award was established in 2010 by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), based on the bequest from Dr. Lászlóné Mohar (née Borbála Sóti), to recognize the environmental research findings of young researchers working in the field of science. The aim of the award is to use the tools and opportunities of science to support the protection of both local and global human environments, preserve biological diversity, and promote the development and adoption of environmentally friendly technologies.

Each year, the award is given to three researchers under the age of 35. Applications must be based on environmental studies published in journals within the last five years, representing significant scientific value.

This year, in the field of economic sciences, Dr. Bettina Szimonetta Beszedics-Jäger, assistant professor at the Department of Environmental Economics and Sustainability, was among the award recipients.

Winning article submitted:
“Evaluating the effectiveness of urban sustainability and climate objectives: a comparative approach” (Discover Sustainability, 2024)

The study analyzes the goals of sustainability and climate strategies in major Hungarian cities using a qualitative method. The research aimed to explore how well participants consider each other’s perspectives during the planning phase of the two types of strategies. The impacts identified in relation to the goals were categorized as positive, neutral, or negative. The results highlight the diversity of sustainability planning and the opportunities and risks inherent within it. In contrast, the impacts related to climate goals showed a much more homogeneous pattern among cities, suggesting that adaptation and mitigation planning provide more exact solutions for municipalities.

Congratulations!
