Quacquarelli Symonds, the British ranking compiler, released its sustainability ranking for the second time, and among the technical universities of regional capitals, BME achieved the best result.
Utilizing a methodology that incorporates indicators designed to assess an institution’s capacity to address global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges, the QS Sustainability Rankings 2024 showcases the participation of nearly 1,400 universities worldwide. TBME has once again secured a place in this global ranking of sustainable universities.
In the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024, released on December 5, 2023, BME secured the 485th position. The overall ranking was calculated based on environmental impact (45%), social impact (45%), and institutional governance (10%) as the main indicators.
When compiling the list, QS evaluated institutions based on more than fifty criteria, such as the existence of a sustainability-focused research center, recording annual fresh water and energy consumption, and active research collaborations with companies listed on the Forbes 2000. The ranking compiler also examined whether the university has a Climate Protection Strategy and a Gender Equality Plan.
In the Environmental Impact field, BME achieved the 375th position in the ranking. Within this category, it performed best in the Environmental Sustainability indicator, ranking 131st among the 1400 institutions assessed.
BME trains professionals in this area in both technical and economic fields in the MA programmes of Environmental Engineering and Regional and Environmental Economics. In addition, the institution’s management has made it a priority to study sustainability based on the UN’s 17 SDGs as well as to identify, introduce, support and promote sustainable institutional operations and environmental solutions.
